against dominique strauss-kahn. >> the prosecution's case may have collapsed because there are now serious questions about the credibility of the maid. we'll get to that. abc's bianna golodryga is at the courthouse where the drama will play out. good morning, bianna. >> reporter: good morning, george. as you can imagine, this is a huge blow for the prosecution. abc news has learned that the district attorney's -- has resigned. dsk will be back in the courtroom where the judge is expected to lessen some of his bail claims and also this case may be dismissed. it's the potential bombshell in the case against dominique strauss-kahn. new evidence that the 32-year-old hotel maid alleging he sexually assaulted her could be lying about key details. strauss-kahn's lawyers claim to have substantial information that would seriously undermine the quality of this prosecution. and gravely undermine the credibility of the complainant. information that was handed over to the defense by the prosecution.

abc news has learned that investigators uncovered financial and phone records revealing potential ties between the alleged victim and an alleged drug dealer, involvement in criminal activity including money laundering and that she considered possible financial gain from pressing charges against strauss-kahn. just last month, the d.a.'s office had a strong case. a grand jury indicting strauss-kahn on seven counts including forced sex and attempted rape. strauss-kahn pleaded not guilty. >> we'll prove in our judgment that mr. strauss-kahn is innocent of these charges. >> reporter: but attorneys for the sofitel maid insisted he was guilty. >> this woman was absolutely the victim of a physical and sexual assault. >> reporter: now abc news has learned prosecutors plan to tell the judge today that their case has all but fallen apart. and, george, as you can imagine this is a huge black eye for the d.a., cyrus vance, a lot of

questions about what this means for his future. >> whether or not they'll be able to have a motion for dismissal. >> how unusual is it for a case to get to this point and for this to happen? >> very unusual. i mean think about how quickly we've moved. in may you had the d.a.'s office saying this was so violent, he was so dangerous that he should be held without bail. and now they may be coming forward in essence saying we don't trust this accuser. remember, they would not be doing this just based on a shady past of the accuser. they're doing this only because they are starting not to believe her themselves >> that's a good point because there are a lot of times the accuser going on trial. you're saying it's beyond what happened in her past? >> absolutely, because the d.a. does not want to be in this position. i mean, the d.a. does not want to be giving evidence to the defense at this point where

they're saying, in effect, we got real questions about our case. so this would not just be we have questions about things that happened in her past, this has to be questions about what she's been telling investigators as they've been investigating this particular incident. >> in your mind is there any chance this case can move forward now. >> it's theoretically possible but based on what we're hearing i think it's very unlikely. >> we'll have to see what happens. >> now we move on to the casey anthony trial. the defense had its final day of testimony yesterday. everyone was waiting to see if the star witness would take the stand and abc's jim avila was there when casey anthony finally spoke. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, george. in every murder trial there is that steely moment of truth. for casey anthony it may have come with her opportunity to face the jury and tell them her story for the first time. would she take the chance to back up her defense claims that caylee anthony died not in her mother's hands but in a swimming pool accident?

>> will the defendant be testifying. >> reporter: on the last day of casey anthony's defense, that was the big question. would she take the stand? the jury hear from perhaps the only person who knows what happened to her daughter. >> you understand that your decision to testify or not testify is solely your decision and your decision alone? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: but first one last critical witness for the defense. crystal holloway, the woman who claimed she had a brief affair with casey's father. >> was this an intimate relationship? >> yes. >> reporter: george anthony admits they were friends but denies they were anything more and he also denies what has become the cornerstone of the defense, that he, caylee's grandfather, knew this was not a murder at all. >> he had said it was an accident that snowballed out of control but i was in shock. >> reporter: the defense claims caylee died in a swimming pool accident and granddad george helped dispose of the body the same way he buried household

pets over the years. >> when you found out that your granddaughter was found with a blanket and with a plastic bag and with duct tape, did you tele law enforcement that that is the way you used to bury your pets? >> reporter: the case that began with such drama had one more chance to compel but casey anthony decided not to have the last word. >> miss anthony, do you understand, first of all, is it your decision not to testify? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: so there it is. the defense case ends with a whimper and now moves to the jury as early as saturday, george? >> that's right, prosecutors have one more chance. jim, thanks. we'll have our legal team, dan abrams and nancy grace standing by to weigh in. >> to politics now. a comment that shocked washington and it was on live tv. a well-known commentator used an off-color word when describing the president's attitude when addressing the press recently.

abc's john berman has more on the word that crossed the line. >> reporter: in the caustic coarse world of cable you hear a lot but no one has ever heard this. mark halperin, an editor for "time" magazine and respected analyst for msnbc used a four-letter word for male anatomy. >> are we on the seven-second delay? i want to characterize how i thought the president behaved. >> let's see what happens. >> you fall down, i'm going to catch you. >> i thought he was kind of a [ bleep ] yesterday. >> oh, my god. delay that. delay that. what are you doing? >> i think the president -- >> i can't believe -- i was joking. don't do that. did we delay that? >> i hit it. i hope it worked. >> reporter: his colleagues clearly shocked. halperin too. he thought the word would be bleeped. the engineer hit the wrong button. no one is using that as an excuse. >> rougher language is deemed

acceptable on some cable news shows but live television means there is no safety net. >> reporter: the white house complained immediately and msnbc suspended halperin indefinitely saying the comment was completely inappropriate and unacceptable. halperin agreed. >> i can't explain why i did it. it was inappropriate, it was disrespectful. i already apologized. i will again to the president and say i'm sorry. >> reporter: a microphone is not always a friend. >> [ bleep ]. >> this is a big [ bleep ] deal. >> that's adam clymer -- >> reporter: those moments do fade from memory and this will too though perhaps more slowly at the white house. john berman, abc news. >> let's bring out jake tapper and a whole lot else going on. first off, apology accepted at the white house? >> reporter: yeah, i believe so. they don't think that mark, who obviously used to be a political director here at abc news, that mark has any bias against them.

as one senior white house official said to me we have much bigger issues on our plate than the banter on "morning joe." >> debt negotiations, that's what it was about on wednesday and you heard a pretty harsh response from republicans on capitol hill. talks appear to be going nowhere and the white house saying they have to wrap it up well before the august 2nd deadline, by july 22nd. how do they get this all started again. >> reporter: negotiations are still going on behind the scenes on the staff level and also on the senior level, the primary level, but ultimately the white house says, speaker boehner, the republican leader of the congress does not have the votes to pass this without democrats and democrats will not go along unless there are some new taxes on wealthier americans and corporations and so ultimately they believe he's got to give because he does not have the vote. >> which makes this the ultimate game of chicken because both speaker boehner and the senate republican leader mitch

mcconnell insist there will not be new taxes in the deal. where is this cautious optimism from the white house coming from. >> reporter: as of now i can't tell whether or not they're cautiously optimistic or just saying that because they know if they convey any other message that would be really bad for the stock market and for the bond markets but they continue to insist that this problem will be solved in time. >> that's right. it would spook the markets which is why treasury secretary timothy geithner has been so unee kwif kwal saying that. the president got invited to go to capitol hill by republicans. he was out fund-raising. how is he going to do? >> reporter: they set a goal to raise money for more than 450,000 people. they have exceeded that goal and they set a goal for $60 million and i think they're going to meet that, as well. >> that will be a lot more than any of the other candidates filing their reports today.

>> this next story will leave you shaking your head. how is it possible that a mother of five could be dead at the bottom of a public swimming pool and no one noticed? abc's linsey davis joins us live from fall river, massachusetts, with more on this bizarre story. linsey? >> reporter: good morning, robin. i think this just may be the strangest story i've ever reported on. in addition to being bizarre it's almost impossible to believe. this is the yellow slide where the mystery all began and while millions will be hitting the pool this weekend, they won't be hitting this -- to this one and for good reason. it's an unspeakable tragedy and a mystery, how could marie joseph seen smiling here at this massachusetts pool drown and then go unnoticed for more than two days? >> i just don't see how they missed it. somebody wasn't doing their job. somebody wasn't paying attention. >> reporter: according to friends joseph, a 36-year-old mother of three went to the pool with a group including her

neighbor's 9-year-old son. >> at the slide she was acting as a chaperone and when he went down the slide she came down. >> reporter: but the 9-year-old says she never surfaced. he told a lifeguard who says he would check the pool. some of her friends initially thought she had simply left. this photo was taken monday. 24 hours after she allegedly drowned. notice the children playing in the pool while joseph's body went undetected, in fact, her body was never discovered until late tuesday night when she was found floating on the surface. six lifeguards were on duty sunday afternoon through tuesday and two city health inspectors tested the pool's water monday and another inspector returned tuesday to do more testing. >> there was nothing abnormal with the ph levels and only notable reference in the report after i reviewed it that one word cloudy? >> massachusetts governor deval patrick says while it is a tragedy it's still not clear what happened. >> it is just terrible and it's

bizarre. the only thing we really know for sure was a body was recovered on tuesday night. >> you realize how incredible this story seems. >> yes, i do. >> i mean, it's unbelievable. >> i would -- i would say the first word is one that was my reaction when i first heard about this. but as of right now, there's so much that has yet been determined. >> reporter: the governor has called for an investigation into the pool's policies and we could get perhaps the first real clues as far as what happened here. autopsy results could be released later today. robin and george? >> so anxious to see what the results will be. put the picture up again. this was after she went missing. how many people are in the pool? how could you not see somebody -- >> i don't know what happened. it is simply not possible. i can't believe -- >> extreme credulity. how many kids were going down the slide. if there's a body underneath, nobody sees it. >> and it was inspected for two days. i can't wait too find out the

real truth. >> as we say good morning, friday morning. >> good morning to all of you. > washington, well, isn't th only place beset by gridlock in the political world. the governor of minnesota has shut down because they failed to close a $5 million deficit. that means 22,000 state workers are now out of a job and state parks will be closed over the holiday weekend. another example of powerful people unable to compromise. nba team facilities are dark today under a newly enacted lockout, all because owners and players failed to agree on a new collective bargaining agreement. second professional sport to shut down in this country as the l lockout is ongoing that began in march. good news from new mexico. fire crews say they're confident they stopped that massive wildfire from advanced toward the los alamos nuclear laboratory. thousands of residents, however, do remain evacuated. meanwhile, in kentucky, police say a tractor trailer may have damaged the train tracks

that caused this massive derailment. 15 train cars carrying vehicles from a plant went off the tracks. finally we're getting a look at never before seen images of the "titanic." these new images show the last remaining crane that held lifeboats on that fateful day. another image shows the massive gash that was opened in the ship's hull and precipitated the sinking. that's the tub. that's the ship captain's tub allowing foror fresh or saltwater bath. that option, the better part of the century. amazing how long it's been on the sea noor and still compels. >> still you can find something new. thanks very much. sam, how is central park? >> oh, george, robin, josh, let me just tell you, this spot, this corner, the only corner that's quiet in central park today. there's a little rehearsal going on. do we have our camera shot. check this out. this stage, i have never seen anything like this before.

a year. also this morning will prince albert of monaco's bride-to-be, will she walk down the aisle? just hours away from a wedding. it's been full of intrigue. also, may not have gotten all the bugs out of air travel but look at this. a passenger stung by a scorpion during a flight. casey anthony's team, the defense, of course, wrapped up their case yesterday with only a few words from their star witness. here was the moment when the judge asked if she planned to testify. >> miss anthony, do you understand, first of all, is it your decision not to testify? >> yes, sir. >> so let's bring in our legal team, nancy grace, from "nancy grace" on hln and right in the studio our legal analyst dan abrams. dan, let me begin with you. i guess in the end no big surprise that casey anthony

didn't testify. >> no big surprise, except that now the defense is in a position where they have not a single bit of evidence to back up the claim that they made in opening statement about george anthony abusing casey, about george anthony disposing of the body, not an iota of evidence. i don't think they'll even be able to argue it in closing arguments. >> do you think they even really considered -- casey ever really considered taking the stand? >> yes, i think that they really did consider it because that's the only source of evidence as dan pointed out many times in closing arguments i've objected number one just throw the defense off their closing statement but facts not in evidence. you can't argue something out of whole cloth but something i found out, another reason she did not take the stand in a sidebar and the transcript is just coming out, the state warned the defense if she takes the stand and you begin to talk about family dysfunction, we're going to bring in literally

hundreds, hundreds of checks tot mom stole from her mother and wrote. that's another thing that would have come in and it was while she was in greece. >> we expected they would bring in negative things about her. i don't believe this came down to the last moment. if it had, this case has gone so badly for the defense that if they were really evaluating day by day are we going to call her, aren't we going to call her, they would have come to the conclusion she'd to testify. it seems to me they decided a long time ago it's not going to happen. >> i think that's neither here nor there. bottom line, they didn't testify and they don't have a leg to stand on. they have proven nothing they set out in the opening statement. they made their bed. now they got to lie in it and there's nothing they can do. there is a remote chance they may put something up in surrebuttal after the state's rebuttal case. >> this is now the defense is going to -- i know nancy doesn't like this term but the defense will have to shift gears a little bit and they are going to

have to now in closing arguments try as hard as -- >> they got to make up something else, dan. that's what you mean. they got to make up another story. they're good at that. >> no evidence behind the theory they put out. >> correct. so now they're going to have to try to focus on the thing that i've been talking about, nancy has been talking about since the opening statement, which is this idea that this was an accident and that the prosecution can't prove cause of death. >> nancy, they did have a witness yesterday, crystal holloway, the alleged mistress of george anthony, who said just that, she said that george anthony told her it was an accident gone wrong. >> yeah, and it came out in detail on her testimony was that he never said tot mom said it was an accident. it was his wishful thinking is what he said on the stand. he wanted it to be an accident that went wrong and snowballed out of control. she never told him that but i'll tell you another thing they did

and we predicted it right here the other day, they sent cindy anthony up for perjury charges because the state is going to bring in the records keeper for cindy's lawyer to show she was there -- she wasn't at home doing those deadly computer >> i want to get to that. that's what's going to happen. the prosecution has their chance to rebut and they'll make it -- focus on cindy anthony. >> this is crucial. absolutely crucial. the premeditation in this case is largely based on those computer searches. so if the prosecutors are now able to undermine cindy anthony's testimony. >> cindy said she did some of these chloroform searches this their house. >> sort of these very incriminating searches, cindy anthony saying i did many of them. i was the one on the computer. if now the prosecutors can demonstrate she was actually at work and that there was no way that she was at home doing these searches, then that's a very important piece of evidence >> that's right. nancy, if they do --

>> no, there's nothing left and what's so disturbing about it on so many levels is that they knowingly set cindy anthony up for perjury charges. i don't know if the state will follow through with them, but, come on, what mother wouldn't put out her arm and say, here, give me the needle, not my daughter. i would do it. so they know cindy will take the fall if she has to. they put her up there but she will be proved a liar under oath. >> i want each of you to weigh in quickly on the jury, dan. what is the defense going to focus on? what is their hope with this jury? >> action. the hope is that this jury forget what is they said in opening statement and that somehow they're able to get this jury to focus on the fact that it's hard to demonstrate based on the physical evidence that the actual cause of death was a homicide as opposed to an accident. a tough argument. >> nancy? >> they're going to focus on cause of death and forensics and try to bring up that kronk is a

by weatherate. minutes before 9. every sum are day could be like this we would be happy. we would have a drought problem and we would like to sprinkle rain in there but really a nice day and warmer than yesterday. 78 in east op and 76 from centreville to chestertown and eastern shore and starting in the 50s and 6 as -- 60s this morning. 73 this side of the bay and sykesville 72. westminster and could by visville and and a -- cockeysville and we have a look at basically clear skies. the low humidity continues. and once again, mostlysunny skies. yesterday it was 87 and will be a couple notches higher. tonight back near 606789 we have this lack of high humidity in the airway a-- which allows temperatures to cool off and lack of cloud cover and wind could be 50s again inland and could be mid-#0s downtown and by the bay. watch the warmup this weekend. pushing 92 tomorrow and it appears as if there will be an
